In 2026, Robert A. Aird, Inc. installed a StarSilent® Smooth acoustical plaster ceiling system at Hillsdale College’s Kirby Center in Washington, DC. The project required precise coordination within a highly detailed interior to deliver both acoustic performance and architectural refinement.

The system was installed over rigid cold-rolled channel and hat channel framing in accordance with manufacturer requirements. Assembly included 25 mm sheathing panels, integrated joint treatment, basecoat plaster, and a smooth finish coat to achieve a seamless, monolithic surface free of visible joints or interruptions.

A full-scale mock-up of a coffered ceiling feature was constructed for review and approval, allowing the design team to evaluate visual depth, transitions, and finish quality prior to full installation.

The completed acoustical plaster ceiling enhances speech intelligibility and sound control within lecture and gathering spaces while maintaining the building’s classical architectural character. The result is a high-performance ceiling system that integrates modern acoustics with refined design intent.
