Saint John Paul II National Shrine

2014-2015

In 2014–2015, Robert A. Aird, Inc. performed multiple interior and exterior scopes as part of the multi-phase renovation and expansion of the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, DC. This high-profile project required coordination across trades and careful execution to meet the building’s architectural and performance requirements.

Aird’s interior scope included installation of gypsum plaster systems throughout chapel and gallery spaces. Work included smooth finish applications, radius and dome transitions, and detailed plaster elements integrated with the building’s architectural features. Surfaces were finished to achieve consistent alignment, clean transitions, and a seamless appearance suitable for lighting and decorative elements.

On the exterior and at key transitions, Aird installed high-performance silicone sealants at windows, control joints, and material interfaces. Sealant work was executed with strict attention to joint preparation, backing, and tooling to ensure long-term durability and performance. This work was later featured by Pecora Corporation as an example of best-in-class sealant detailing.

In select wall and ceiling assemblies, closed-cell spray polyurethane foam (SPF) was installed to enhance thermal performance and air sealing. These systems contributed to improved energy efficiency, moisture control, and overall building envelope performance.

The completed work reflects Aird’s ability to coordinate multiple specialty scopes while maintaining a high level of craftsmanship on a nationally significant project.
