Congregation Beth Ahabah
2018
In 2018, Robert A. Aird, Inc. was selected to perform a comprehensive stucco restoration at Congregation Beth Ahabah, a historic Reform synagogue located in Richmond, Virginia. Established in 1789 and housed in a Neo-Classical sanctuary designed by Noland and Baskervill in 1904, the building required careful restoration to preserve its architectural character while improving long-term performance.
Our scope included the complete removal of deteriorated stucco and installation of a new, high-performance stucco system across the exterior façade. Years of weathering had compromised the existing assembly, and the replacement was critical to restoring both the building’s appearance and structural protection.
Special attention was given to maintaining the integrity of the historic façade. Our team ensured that the new stucco system matched the original profiles, proportions, and visual character of the structure while incorporating modern materials to improve durability, weather resistance, and energy performance.
This work was part of a broader $3.5 million renovation and expansion that included accessibility upgrades, mechanical improvements, and integration of modern building systems. Throughout the project, Aird coordinated closely with the project team to ensure the stucco restoration aligned with the overall preservation goals.
The completed façade restores the building’s historic presence while providing a long-lasting, high-performance exterior envelope—demonstrating Aird’s expertise in executing sensitive restoration work on architecturally significant structures.
