Tudor Place - Mower House
2023
Robert A. Aird, Inc. was selected to perform exterior stucco work as part of an addition to the historic Mower House at Tudor Place in Washington, D.C., a former service building originally used to house lawn and groundskeeping equipment for the estate. The project required a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail, as the new construction needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing historic structure.
Our scope included the installation of a fiber-reinforced cement stucco system featuring two distinct textures, carefully designed to match the character and proportions of the original building. The lower portion of the structure received a heavily aggregated stucco finish, while the upper elevations were completed with a smoother, more refined stucco texture. Achieving consistency between the new addition and the existing façade—particularly at the highly textured base—was one of the most challenging aspects of the project.
Matching the color, aggregate size, and finish profile of the existing stucco required multiple field samples, mockups, and close coordination with the design team. Our craftsmen adjusted material blends and application techniques to replicate the depth, shadowing, and visual weight of the original finish. The result was an exacting match that met the expectations of the owner and project team, allowing the addition to read as a natural extension of the historic structure rather than a new intervention.
Throughout the work, special care was taken to respect the historic setting of Tudor Place, ensuring clean transitions between old and new construction and preserving the understated utility character of the Mower House. The completed addition successfully blends modern performance with historic appearance, demonstrating Robert A. Aird, Inc.’s ability to deliver precision finish matching and preservation-sensitive stucco work on architecturally significant sites.
